Management of the land and wildlife were the primary objectives in the design of this year-round family retreat on Montana’s Flathead Lake. The client’s vision for exceptional ecological function, aesthetic refinement, and dwelling is realized in a minimalist design that amplifies the spatial organization and ecology of the site.

Stone Quarry Bay’s rocky peninsula, marshes, meadows, wooded hillsides, and stone shelves and ridges are home to black bear, deer, osprey, and an extended family of sophisticated environmentalists. In support of the client’s values and vision, Swift Company created a series of connected places for gathering, recreation, and contemplation within a family compound that includes a large workshop, caretaker’s quarters, dock, and main residence, The Point House.

The Point House is intentionally understated in its design and siting. Set back from the shoreline, the building grows out of a stone ridge extending to the bay. The north façade is opaque to reinforce the ridgeline and separate the public from the private, while the south side is transparent. Outside this minimal development, the native landscape is protected and enhanced through forest management, selective plantings of native species, and habitat restoration.

All aspects of site design are meticulously detailed. Each design action couples ecological function with aesthetic refinement for elegant cohabitation with nature.
