Swift Company was invited to join a design competition creating the eastern campus gateway and new athletic facility at the Southeast University in Nanjing, China. Landforms and cascading water submerges the building in the landscape of the Yangtze River drainage basin, creating a signature entry supporting campus life.
More >Two athletic buildings lift out of the delta and are clothed with green roofs. A cascading water feature extends the campus axis and is the focus of the athletic village. The composition rises to the east emphasizing the major entry on the ceremonial plaza defined by water cascading down monumental stairs to a larger campus canal. Between the buildings, a terraced reflecting pool is crisscrossed by walkways connecting the two buildings. An amphitheater and plaza at the northwest corner of the site weaves the new site with the existing Student Union Building and surrounding campus. The observation tower marks location from the west, while entry gates welcome visitors and students from the east. The design reflects an integrated collaboration between designers from East and West, and was awarded second and voted most popular by the University community.
